Tyrone Power turns in one of the most memorable film noir performances of all time in Nightmare Alley. This is one of those bottled wine types of film, where the longer you think about it and the more times you see it, the more your appreciation for it grows. You could actually dismiss this film the first time, but somehow it just draws you slowly back in and you eventually devours you with its movie magic.

The trailer for the latest from director Edward Zwick (Glory) has been up over at Apple (watch here) and certainly gives hope this could be one of the highlights for 2008.

Synopsis:

Based on an extraordinary true story, DEFIANCE is an epic tale of family, honor, vengeance and salvation in World War II. The year is 1941 and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being massacred by the thousands. Managing to escape certain death, three brothers take refuge in the dense surrounding woods they have known since childhood. There they begin their desperate battle against the Nazis. Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell star as brothers who turn a primitive struggle to survive into something far more consequential – a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by saving thousands of others.

At first it is all they can do to stay alive. But gradually, as whispers of their daring spreads, they begin to attract others – men and women, young and old – willing to risk everything for the sake of even a moment’s freedom. Tuvia (CRAIG) is a reluctant leader and his decisions are challenged by his brother, Zus (SCHREIBER) who worries that Tuvia’s idealistic plans will doom them all. Asael (BELL) is the youngest – caught between his brothers’ fierce rivalry. As a brutal winter descends, they work to create a community, and to keep faith alive when all humanity appeared to be lost.

DEFIANCE is directed by Edward Zwick (BLOOD DIAMOND, GLORY) from a screenplay by Zwick and Clay Frohman, based on Nechama Tec’s non-fiction book of the same name. The producers are Zwick and Pieter Jan Brugge. The team recreating the forest haven includes two-time Oscar®-nominated cinematographer Eduardo Serra (BLOOD DIAMOND, GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING), production designer Dan Weil (BLOOD DIAMOND, THE BOURNE IDENTITY) and Oscar®-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (GOSFORD PARK, A ROOM WITH A VIEW).

New Cinema Wallpaper of the Day

Hitting US theaters on October 10th from Sony Pictures Classics is this new incarnation of Ashes of Time, billed as Ashes of Time Redux. However you look at it, seeing this new version will be like seeing the film for the first time. I can only wonder if in its first theatrical run back towards the mid-90’s if the colors leaped off the screen with exploding vibrancy as they doing in this updated print. Many fans have only experienced this film on its numerous crappy video releases and until now have really been robbed a proper chance to view and experience it. This latest version does mark an incredible opportunity to rediscover this film and fully see and swim in the cinematic canvas Wong Kar-wai had painted along with Christopher Doyle and William Chang. Previous versions of this might as well been in black and white by comparison. This is one film to write down as a must see in movie theaters for 2008. This isn’t a film to simply watch on a computer or on a home theater system, this is a movies movie, the kind that can only be truly seen and enjoyed while flickering up on the big screen.

Two days in a row with archival images from films from 1927! Today we have this classic from Fritz Lang and count me in as being one of the incredibly excited to see the original version of the film (whenever that lands in the next several months in the form of video or otherwise). July 2008 has certainly been an exciting times for fans of this film.
