John Harper (Billy Chapin) and Pearl Harper (Sally Jane Bruce) desperately try to escape the menacing Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) in The Night of the Hunter. The boat sequence I’ve always found to be fantastic with its nightmarish fairy tale realization. Laughton’s choice here to film it that way is quite remarkable to not play it entirely straight and matter of fact.
