New Cinema Wallpaper of the Day
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
I’m surprised at the popularity of this film here at Cinema is Dope. Previous wallpaper I’ve posted from this film has been in the top 10 for months now (view here) with no signs of letting up. I’m glad now to post this great artwork from its Japanese poster for the surging cult status this film seems to be rolling up.

It seems to separate the karaoke masters from the karaoke neophytes to count how many times one has sung this song for karaoke. If you never have rocked out to this, then you surely have not lived a very long karaoke existence. Forget Elvis. Forget the Beatles. Forget Jefferson Starship. Bring on some Linda Linda Linda for the all-time karaoke anthem! The film itself is an absolute treasure that leisurely unfolds with a near avant garde prowess as we follow a group of girls as they come of age both as women and as musicians. Leave it to helmer Nobuhiro Yamashita to craft a memorable journey that in any other hands would have been the Sisterhood of Traveling Guitars.
Highly recommended viewing and it’s out on Region 1 DVD from Viz Pictures (Official US Site).

Leave it to Midnight Madness programmer Colin Geddes to discover this great gem from Japan. He was out of the gate months ago in wanting to screen it at a time when the only thing anyone knew about it was that it had L (Ken’ichi Matsuyama) from the Death Note series in it. The Midnight Madness by all accounts I’ve read was nothing short of electrical and sensational. I cannot see this film soon enough!!!

Almodovar in this outing, one of my favorites of his, seems so alive in each frame. Cinema dances, leaps and cavorts in its sunshine and darkness without missing a beat. This particular scene with Penelope Cruz is a real standout scene that when I saw it for the first time, didn’t see it coming and it fit so perfectly into the flow of the film.
