With the addition of these 7 images, there is now 25 total images for Let the Right One In on Cinema is Dope. This latest batch features many previously unreleased publicity images from the film, as well as additional production stills that for whatever to this point have not been widely available.

Please note that in addition to this photo gallery, I will be posting a video I took of this amazing church (posted later Sunday or Monday night).

Although many might only point to the 140 or so fountains of Neuchatel as its main highlights (some that date back to the 16th century), I found that the 800+ year old La Collegiale Church (official site) which dates back to 1135 as a must visit when stopping through. It took over 100 years for it to be originally built and it was then consecrated in 1276. In 1450 when a fire wiped out the town it still somehow mostly remained and later re-opened. Supposedly some of the black markings around the church were from this fire (you can see this in a handful of pictures in the gallery).

Outside from its elegant and massive organ, the Cenotaph of the Counts of Neuchâtel (dates to 1372), which is the only monument of its kind outside of Italy is one amazing works of architecture. It sits across from the organ and features 15 painted statues of various knights and ladies from the towns past. Several pictures of these are included in the gallery above.

I believe the southern bell tower is perhaps the only original part of the structure remaining with the rest having been changed over the centuries. La Collegiale was a Catholic church until the Reformation (which also marked significant transformation of the church structure itself) and is now used by the Protestant Parish of Neuchatel.

Walking into the interior of the church was amazing. I heard “early Gothic” quite often to describe the church and in that respect it’s very fascinating as parts of it seem familiar and others like the origins for how other churches to come riffed off this blueprint. As I entered the main interior I couldn’t help but feel transported back in time with so much of its layout seeming very different from anything I had seen, despite being the basic church layout of rows of pews, stain glass windows, etc.,

This is the kind of historical place you walk into and instantly feel an ambiance of its past all around you. For those attending NIFFF, I highly recommend making the trek up the hill south of most festival activities to visit it, not to mention afterwards you can overlook the town and lake from its vantage point.

It was the summer of 2008 and I found myself for the first time in Neuchatel, Switzerland, to take part in one of the worlds most blissful film festivals. What adjectives you say and yes they many and all do apply sincerely. To a certain degree you could call this a small genre fest and you in a way would be right but still so damn wrong at the same time. There is something so intoxicating and refreshing going on here each year at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) that regardless of size it feels infinitely grand and magical. Every screening is filled with energetic but respectful audiences and with its newly added outdoor screenings where you can gush over Wong Kar Wai’s Ashes of Time Redux set against the backdrop of the Swiss Alps, there are few things in life that can compare, let alone film going experiences. Many people put Venice, TIFFF, Cannes and more on their dial as must fests to attend and I’m sure those are great and all, but seriously you have not lived until you have stepped foot here. Recommended for film lovers of all kinds, treat yourself right someday. Please follow along in March of 2009 as I profile this film festival.

If you are visiting the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) one of the first striking features of the landscape you will see is Lake Neuchatel (largest whole lake in Switzerland; wiki) that sits just to the east with the Swiss Alps just off to the distance on its other side. The town itself is on the northwestern shore of the lake.

On the northern part of the lake sits La Tene, which is famous for its prehistoric discoveries (La Tene culture wiki).

Lake Neuchatel offers a perfect back drop for the NIFFF outdoor Air screenings where the lake sits just behind it with several available park benches to nestle into, perhaps watch the sun set or just listen along as Wong Kar Wai’s Ashes of Time Redux plays close by. The lake also offers a nice relaxation point for morning strolls, scenic photography and several nice spots where you can sit and chat with others about films that have screened. There are at least one or two restaurant specific boat ferries which depart from the towns dock that run at set times which you can take for a nice romantic or relaxing lunch/dinner out on the lake.

Closing night at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) brings the festival to a larger movie theater venue complete with a balcony. Balcony movie theaters always fascinate me for some reason as they do tend to make non-balcony ones look rather boring by comparison. Each year closing night at NIFFF brings about the announcement of what films win what awards and an honoring of the main festival guest of honor. In this video we will see the awards announced, some winners speaking, brief appearances by Xavier Gens, Joe Dante, Pascal Forney and Hideo Nakata.

For their 8th edition, the big prize winners were Sleep Dealer and Let the Right One In. Pascal Forney who directed the short Vincent le Magnifique won the H.R. Giger Prize for the best Swiss Short Film. Those in Austin may recall his short after NIFFF screened at Fantastic Fest.

The guest of honor was Hideo Nakata, who also had his most recent film, L: Change the World screened immediately following the awards being announced.

Closing night was a perfect end to the festival and the audience was extremely enthusiastic with applause and energy. Everyone that got up on stage certainly felt their appreciation. L: Change the World suffered too much from its own weight and seeming unsure on what it wanted to be, which seemed to zap some of the audience energy until the ending act which is so gleefully outrageous it kicked everyone full force on the front of their chair and cheering along. The film took awhile to get to a high note and luckily it was its ending, which put a perfect exclamation point on a very memorable week and first time in Neuchatel and NIFFF for me.
