Here we see a young Charles Foster Kane given a replacement sled named “The Crusader” where a terse, “Merry Christmas” is exchanged. This moment although incredibly brief offers a key piece of the puzzle in helping to unravel one of the greatest secrets of cinema lore… Rosebud.

Richard Linklater mentioned last night at the special screening of his film at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar that he recently helped and took part in a plaque (along with the daughter of Mr. Welles) honoring the Mercury Theater in New York being placed on it (currently is an office building that without the plaque one would probably never know what it once was). Mr. Linklater noted of Mr. Welles that he was born in the perfect time to master theater, radio and cinema but ironically at the wrong time to be an independent filmmaker and how today’s set up would have much better facilitated his filmmaking career.

When Quentin Tarantino was last in Austin he mentioned 36 Hours, in particular the performance of Rod Taylor being hugely influential on his crafting of the character Col. Hans Landa (played by Christoph Waltz) in Inglourious Basterds. Indeed this is one of Taylor’s shining hours among many in cinema and a great not seen enough WWII thriller. Netflix or check this one out on DVD soon!

Keybook stills are much more rare to come across, especially ones from one of the all-time great movies and all-time great film noirs… Out of the Past! This image of Robert Mitchum as Jeff Bailey ranks up there as one of the best movie stills I’ve ever laid eyes on. Incredibly rare stills and finds like this are why I do this site. An absolute pleasure to preserve and share this treasure of cinema. I didn’t fully restore this still but did spend a good chunk of time restoring it to get it into this quality so it had the look and depth it did when it originally was printed (some surface scratches and blemishes are the only defects that remain).
