Cue “Theme from Shaft“, written and recorded by Isaac Hayes. As iconic as Shaft is with cinema and in particular 70’s cinema, I’m glad at last to post this rare restored still of John Shaft (Richard Roundtree) here. I hope that you enjoy this and are having a great week as we close out this decade and move into the 2010’s. Happy early New Years from Cinema is Dope!

SURPRISE #3

Another Richard Rush film that came out in 1968 along with Psych-Out was The Savage Seven. I have to say I’ve been curious as to what other films it would have been double billed with at drive-ins back in the 70’s. I have this at least partially answered in this November 1974 calendar from the Twilight Drive-In Theatre in Jamestown, Tennessee. In it we see it was double billed with Mark of the Devil. The overall lineup shown for this month is interesting with titles ranging from Prime Cut early in the month to adult titles getting played on Sunday nights!

A Month Long Celebration of Psych-Out (1968) at CID: November 2009

Each day in November of 2009 at CID we will be celebrating Richard Rush cinema one still at a time with his 1968 film, Psych-Out, along the way with added surprises.

This was such a fantastic image from Blazing Saddles to preserve that I felt it deserved the extra large treatment of 2000 pixels width and then promptly decided why not go even larger with a near 3000 pixel width and 2000 pixel height large version.

It does seem strange that this is the first Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine image featured on Cinema is Dope! Well here is too many more images of both of them in the weeks, months and years ahead, as I certainly plan on featuring more. Using this as both of their debuts combined I think greatly works as it’s some very grand and exciting Japanese poster artwork with a nice map interwoven throughout it. Very clever this poster is with a feeling like it’s coming right at you!

About Japanese Poster Artwork Celebration Month:
To kick off 2009, I can think of no better way of doing so than celebrating Japanese poster artwork. The emphasis will be more of western films through the lens of Japanese poster artwork and of course some of my own personal all-time favorites. At a future date I’ll probably have a month devoted to solely Japanese films and their poster artwork.
