About Japanese Poster Artwork Celebration Month:
To kick off 2009, I can think of no better way of doing so than celebrating Japanese poster artwork. The emphasis will be more of western films through the lens of Japanese poster artwork and of course some of my own personal all-time favorites. At a future date I’ll probably have a month devoted to solely Japanese films and their poster artwork. So be sure to tune in each day during the month of January as I have an incredible amount of incredible Japanese posters that will be on display. Hopefully at the end of this I can convert many of you into life long fans of Japanese posters!
Please help and spread the word on the January 2009 themed Japanese Poster Celebration Month here at Cinema is Dope. Tweet your friends. Mention it in your Facebook status or Friendfeed. Link to it on your blog. Any support is greatly appreciated!!!!!

New Cinema Wallpaper of the Day

As the fire roasts around the world celebrating Christmas today, I thought these images would make for a great added gift and a definite must for marking your calendars to check this out in 2009 (hopefully US audiences will get to see the original in addition to the dubbed version Disney is putting together). I haven’t seen a lot of the earlier Hayao Miyazaki work and am just now going back through it. I’m starting with Porco Rosso (Kurenai no buta ) and going on from there. If you have any suggestions on titles of his you think I should 100% check out please let me know in the comments below. I plan to watch them all but specific recommended titles would help me out for which ones to watch first!

John Harper (Billy Chapin) and Pearl Harper (Sally Jane Bruce) desperately try to escape the menacing Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) in The Night of the Hunter. The boat sequence I’ve always found to be fantastic with its nightmarish fairy tale realization. Laughton’s choice here to film it that way is quite remarkable to not play it entirely straight and matter of fact.

This post marks the one thousandth post here at Cinema is Dope! Over the last year and four months that I’ve had this site up and going it has been quite a magical ride and journey so far. Thanks to everyone out there that has supported me and this independent site devoted to the celebration and preservation of cinema and its history. I hope you enjoy this image from one of the greatest fantasy films of all-time in The Wizard of Oz (1939) and you enjoy the next one thousand posts here. Onward and onward I plan to keep this site moving ahead and growing each and every single day!

Nominated for a FIPRESCI Critics Award and playing at the upcoming Times BFI 52nd London Film Festival (October 15th-30th), Hansel and Gretel (film listing) is on my must see list for films released in 2008 (it came out in South Korea in 2007 but gets more of an international presence this year). The film marks the sophomore effort of Yim Pil-Sung who last brought us the divisive Antarctic Journal. Every image I’ve seen from the film bears an incredibly lush and stylish dark fairy tale theme and word of mouth has been nothing short of exceptional. I was hoping to catch this one on the big screen, but don’t see that happening anytime soon, so I will probably buy the DVD.
