One of the films I’m still eager to hit my doorstep is Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Tokyo Sonata. It features from what I can gather another great performance by Teruyuki Kagawa. I really need to at some point take a Teruyuki Kagawa break and catch up on all his past work. This film is currently screening at the Toronto International Film Festival (film listing) and is a not to be missed title!

New Cinema Wallpaper of the Day

In the first image at the top we have Yoshino Kimura with binoculars.
The second image features Yoshinori Okada.
The third image features (left to right): Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, Yoshino Kimura and Naoki Tanaka.
Fine, Totally Fine from director Yousuke Fujita, won top honors at Nippon Connection earlier this year. When you see Tokyo! at Fantastic Fest this year, be sure and look for a nice little cameo by Yoshiyoshi Arakawa in it during Bong Joon-ho’s segment of Shaking Tokyo. Admittedly it’s not much but it certainly made me laugh!

The creative fusion of Anders Thomas Jensen and Susanne Bier turn in one of the more memorable family melodrama’s of this decade. IFC Films has this film out on home video and is a highly recommended video rental or purchase. Mads Mikkelsen turns in another stellar performance and Stine Fischer Christensen (who is also great in Echo) really plays her highly emotional and roller coaster role to perfection. Rolf Lassgard is also of note here as he steals nearly every scene he is in with a very gripping portrayal that as much as you want to hate him, you can’t help but ultimately feel sympathy. The in-your-face camera work does take a bit to get used to, but after awhile you won’t realize it and certainly adds more tension to the melodrama throughout.

A melodrama tale of family secrets and a marriage on the rocks shapes this 2006 visually dazzling Ole Christian Madsen film that features unbelievably naked and riveting performances by Mads Mikkelsen and Stine Stengade. The film has been released on DVD in Denmark and Australia with English subtitles, but has yet to find a US video release.

Olivia Thirlby really came onto the map for me with her performance here as Stephanie. Between her work here and in Juno, she is one of the brightest young actresses on the film scene. I have a little bit more on my thoughts on her in the Twitch piece below. Of special note today is a great interview with her by Sean Axmaker over at GreenCine (read here).
