JCVD (film listing) gets its North American debut next week in Austin, Texas, (Friday, September 19th at 10:00 PM; Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar) at this years Fantastic Fest! Who thought in 2008 that you would find Austin audiences buzzing for a new Jean-Claude Van Damme film? Will if you made that bold prediction, you were right (according to the latest buzz numbers off the Fantastic Fest site). So to date this year we have now seen the return of Mickey Rourke and now Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The question I often get is if I think Austin audiences attending Fantastic Fest are aware of this film JCVD. Judging by the BUZZ page (view here) on the festival site (it displays the most popular films by how many people have added them to their online calendar as attending) I would say that Austin audiences are very much aware of the film having it currently ranked the second most want to attend screening of the festival (only behind Kevin Smith’s new film).

Jean-Claude Van Damme along with Martyrs was the talk of Cannes earlier this year. For those that miss its North American premiere at Midnight Madness (film listing), you can catch it at Fantastic Fest (film listing).

I’ve only come across Van Damme once in my life and that was last year when they had him kick off the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) by having him introduce of all things, Danny Boyle’s sci-fi thriller, Sunshine. To say he is a celebrity there would be an understatement as he was mobbed every step he took. If he was to go to the bathroom, then he would have hundreds of people following him like a bee on honey.
