Let the Right One In (event listing) is screening at Fantastic Fest this year and is an absolute must see!
Let the Right One In (Matt’s Review) is one of the most refreshing horror films I’ve seen in ages. Just when you think horror cinema has gotten stale or any tale revolving around vampires routine, along comes this magical film that will blow you away. It’s been a film festival charmer this year racking up awards at a dizzying pace, not to mention taking top honors at Tribeca. I’ll never forget the looks of amazement on Tim League’s (Alamo Drafthouse, Fantastic Fest) and Todd Brown’s (Twitch) face as they walked out of seeing it at the Berlin Film Festival’s European Market earlier this year.
Seeing Let the Right One In at NIFFF was one of the highlights of 2008 so far for me. Along with that it was a great experience interviewing its director Tomas Alfredson (read interview here).

The mythic place of this bar/hotel ballroom is one of the real treasures of cinema. This hallowed ground serves a place in the heart of film lovers where cinema can transport us into places where we have no idea where reality and fantasy begin and end. Places that capture our hearts and imagination. Places that leave us forever in debate on their true meaning.

Fabrice Du Welz’s latest film Vinyan is set to storm both the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival and the Sitges Film Festival. It has been a 4 year absence since he first brought us this film, Calvaire, and at least among his fans Vinyan can’t get here soon enough!

SYNOPSIS
Unable to accept the the loss of their son in the 2005 Tsunami, Jeanne and Paul Bellmer have remained in Phuket. Desperately clinging to the fact that his body was never recovered, Jeanne has convinced herself that the boy was kidnapped by traffickers in the chaos that followed the catastrophe… that her son is still alive. Paul is sceptical, but cannot bring himself to shatter his wife’s last hope. Bribing the sinister Mr Gao to take them by boat to the pirate-infested jungles of the Thai/Burmese border, the traumatized couple embark on a quest that will plunge them through paranoia and betrayal, ever deeper into an alien universe, a supernatural realm where the dead are never truly dead, and where nightmares, obsession and horrifying reality converge.

If you play a movie trivia game and it doesn’t matter which one it is, there is a very very good chance you will get a question in some form or fashion tailored around it marking Johnny Depp’s cinema debut.

The Wicker Man is one of the better supernatural thrillers to have emerged in cinema and also one of the more influential among cinephiles and filmmakers (like Edgar Wright with Hot Fuzz).

Nice black & white of Quentin Tarantino directing Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike in Death Proof. I don’t know what I make of all the casting rumors swirling around Tarantino’s Inglorious project other than the rumor mill seems to be going through ever actor alive in the Rolodex.
You can read my interview with Death Proof Sydney Tamiia Poitier over on Twitch (read here).

With the upcoming movie Quarantine about to come out, some out there may not realize it’s based on this film. In fact the trailer alone for Quarantine makes it look like a near shot for shot remake, except in the English language. Of the one hand held camera POV films in recent memory, this one is the most horrific, thrilling and well executed. The main difference that will mark this one is the sense of realism and the directors constant choice to go for live practical effects versus CGI. The story revolves around Angela (Manuela Velasco) who does a late night TV show. Cut to just another night where she is covering a local fire station and ventures out with them on a routine call at an apartment building. With her lone cameraman in tow and terror just around the corner… things quickly spiral into a dizzying ascent of all out hell once they reach the apartment building. Filmmakers Jaume Balaguere and Paco Plaza are crafting a new voice to be reckoned with in horror cinema and their sequel, [REC] 2, couldn’t get here soon enough.
Expect a US release of this film sometime later this year or next year, though probably on DVD/Blu-Ray and not theaters.

Marley Shelton is one of the better actresses out there working and in Planet Terror she turns in a unhinged performance electric performance. The only upcoming film of hers that might be interesting to me is the 2009 film Women in Trouble by Sebastian Gutierrez, which at least on paper is saying it will have some Altman vibes going on.
