SURPRISE #3

Another Richard Rush film that came out in 1968 along with Psych-Out was The Savage Seven. I have to say I’ve been curious as to what other films it would have been double billed with at drive-ins back in the 70’s. I have this at least partially answered in this November 1974 calendar from the Twilight Drive-In Theatre in Jamestown, Tennessee. In it we see it was double billed with Mark of the Devil. The overall lineup shown for this month is interesting with titles ranging from Prime Cut early in the month to adult titles getting played on Sunday nights!

SURPRISE #2

More Richard Rush surprises for the CID month long Psych-Out celebration. We take a pause today to show you this incredibly rare and amazing German lobbycard of Jack Nicholson in another San Francisco set Richard Rush film, Hells Angels on Wheels… or as it was known in German – Die Wilden Schlager von San Francisco.

The emphasis will be more of western films through the lens of Japanese poster artwork and of course some of my own personal all-time favorites. Japanese Poster Appreciation Month – January 2009

I can only imagine the conversation the artist of this poster must have had with its distributor… “You want to cover up Eastwood’s eyes!?!?! EASTWOOD EYES COVERED UP!?!? HAVE YOU GONE MAD MAN?” To which the artist might have said, “When have you ever seen another poster like this where he gets to look like a complete badass with sunglasses on?” I think it works. You have a slightly unshaven Eastwood staring back just taunting you with how cool he looks in this. Like he is saying back at you, “Do you really think you can ever look cooler than this?”

The one thing that always puzzled me about this movie is why no one seems to shoot at the tires. Did they have bullet proof tires on this bus? Maybe I missed something.

Ray Lovelock and Marc Porel get poster artwork that is literally exploding on fire with guns a blazing in this great Japanese poster for Ruggero Deodato’s, Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man, which was based on a script by Fernando Di Leo. I have a pretty funny story about interviewing Deodato for this film which I might post about at a later date. I did ask him about Di Leo’s involvement and that whole angle but for the life of me can’t remember any details.

Fans of Poliziottesco/Poliziotteschi cinema should keep a watch for Mike Malloy’s documentary that fully explores it inside and out called Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films that Ruled the ’70s (IMDb listing).
