Public Enemy Number One is way high up on the films I’m dying to see. Part 2 hits cinemas in mid-November overseas. By all accounts this film looks to feature an incredible powerhouse Vincent Cassel. I miss the over the top crime films that had teeth. So many crime films these days feel like they get mired down in emotional landscapes as if they were a music video for some nameless emo band. Give me The Outfit, Red Circle, Milano calibro 9 or something along those lines anyday… hopefully this new Public Enemy series gets back those teeth.

This followup to Public Enemy Number One (Part 1) hits French theaters on November 19th and the US release should be sometime next year from Senator Entertainment depending on how they plan to release both parts 1 and 2. Everyone I’ve spoken to that saw part one in this series at the Toronto International Film Festival has absolutely raved about it and placed it in their top 2-3 films they’ve seen there. Any film described as a mix between The Outfit and Scarface gets my attention and I can’t wait to see this complete series!

JCVD (film listing) gets its North American debut next week in Austin, Texas, (Friday, September 19th at 10:00 PM; Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar) at this years Fantastic Fest! Who thought in 2008 that you would find Austin audiences buzzing for a new Jean-Claude Van Damme film? Will if you made that bold prediction, you were right (according to the latest buzz numbers off the Fantastic Fest site). So to date this year we have now seen the return of Mickey Rourke and now Jean-Claude Van Damme.

One of the really promising looking titles at the Toronto International Film Festival this year is Part 1 of Public Enemy Number One (film listing). The Toronto write up makes the bold claim it’s the French Scarface. Whatever the case is, the advanced images and trailer looks compelling and Vincent Cassel can play a hot-blooded moody anti-hero in his sleep.

The question I often get is if I think Austin audiences attending Fantastic Fest are aware of this film JCVD. Judging by the BUZZ page (view here) on the festival site (it displays the most popular films by how many people have added them to their online calendar as attending) I would say that Austin audiences are very much aware of the film having it currently ranked the second most want to attend screening of the festival (only behind Kevin Smith’s new film).
