Restoration Notes:
 
The restoration of Giu la testa is based on the original camera negative and on the magnetic soundtracks provided by the Sergio Leone Estate. This copy corresponds with the complete version of Sergio Leone’s approved edit from 1971. The Techniscope camera negative was scanned at 2k resolution and digitally restored; color correction was made using a positive print from 1971 as a reference.
 
The English soundtrack was restored from the original magnetic materials used for the monophonic mixing. The film was restored by Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in 2009, under the auspices of the Sergio Leone Estate.

When I lasted posted an image for Duck, You Sucker is was a B&W still from Argentina and I provided my notes on seeing the new restored version at Cannes Film Festival this year (link). Today we move over to France with a magnificently towering image of James Coburn in an official lobbycard from its release there where it was known as Il etait une fois… la revolution.

Getting to see the new Duck, You Sucker (Giu La Testa aka Fistful of Dynamite) restoration on the big screen at Cannes this year was by far one of the biggest highlights of 2009 for me. I still remember getting goose bumps as I walked out with the end credits rolling blasting the beautiful score by Ennio Morricone. Before the screening they had several members of the Leone family present to introduce the film and I believe some crew that used to work with him. You can’t really beat that kind of unique setup for such a wild western as this!

This new restoration save for some slight picture blemishes early on is a sight to behold and sound wise equally amazing. If you think you have seen and experienced Duck, You Sucker before, just wait until you see it like this! That the restoration has a digital version should help it to garner more chances for limited theatrical engagements.

The second still here is an extremely rare one showing a very hands on Sergio Leone behind the scenes ready to blow some stuff up.

The first still which comes from its original Argentinean release is also rare and has a larger to life feel to it with a looming James Coburn and Rod Steiger filling its frame.

With cinema there is often that one film that places a certain star, writer or director on the map for you. That when you see a certain film with someone attached that it not only puts them on the map for you with all their future projects but also retroactively does so as well. In that regard the Spaghetti Western, Arizona Colt, seems to work as that one vehicle for many that puts Giuliano Gemma on the map for them. Some may come to him via the Spaghetti Western title Day of Anger, but for the most part I think Arizona Colt always seems to be the one film of his which makes cinephiles stand up and take notice.

Please note I will be posting a great image of Giuliano Gemma in the 1962 Duccio Tessari sword and sandals movie The Titans towards the middle of June.
