Dante Lam turns in a shot in the arm and return to form for great Hong Kong action and crime cinema with Beast Stalker (Ching yan). He takes the gritty Michael Mann Heat style of cinema verite style and reworks it in his own cannon with strong lead performances from Nicholas Tse and Nick Cheung. Nicholas Tse is perfect as a overworked cop pushed well past his stress level and while yet being drained by all accounts won’t relent on vengeance and pursuing justice. He might be emotional but you get the sense he hasn’t taken a day off in years and perhaps gets 2 hours of sleep a night. He’s the cop that never checks himself out mentally from duty, staying on the clock and always rushing to solve any case or beat he is working.
