With a heavy helping of controversy, Tropic Thunder has stormed the box office with long lines and pulling in incredible numbers and dethroning a certain well known bat along the way. Funny how controversy in many cases always seems to translate into instant box office success!

I should definitely credit Lars for setting me off on this quest to re-find this amazing image from one of my all-time favorites, Rolling Thunder. The last time I used my 30+ batch of stills was helping out some of the MadMovies guys for a piece they were doing on Paul Schrader. Unfortunately since that time my collection of collected memorabilia got split up. I’ve now come across the missing portions of my collection and will at last be getting up my entire selection of imagery up here (minus some of the giant sized lobbies I have).

Carice van Houten, whom certainly makes a name for herself in this outing, will next be seen in the upcoming horror film Dorothy Mills. Midnight Madness (view blog) programmer Colin Geddes was actually the first person that put this film on the map to me. While I was at my first Sitges Film Festival he literally raved about this film and told me see it regardless of the fact it didn’t have any English subtitles. Needless to say I found the film a complete and welcome surprise with filmmaker Paul Verhoeven adding yet another film to his list of great cinematic works.

For WWII cinema we have had some amazing films in recent memory in Black Book and The Pianist (and who knows… maybe the upcoming Inglorious Bastards will be great as well). For 2008 we have another film, this time around with a five-woman commando kicking ass unit that must parachute into occupied France and protect the secrets of D-Day landings. This based on a true story and filled to the brim action-war-thriller is definitely on my must see list. If these images and the synopsis below don’t excite you to see this film, then I don’t know what will!
Synopsis:
May 1944, A five-woman commando unit parachutes into occupied France on a daring and dangerous mission to protect the secret of D-Day landings and eliminate Colonel Heindrich, the head of German counter-intelligence.
Louise (Sophie Marceau) is a trained sniper and the widow of a Resistance leader.
Jeanne (Julie Depardieu) is a tough hooker who won’t hesitate to kill.
Gaelle (Deborah Francois) is a young and brilliant explosives expert desperate to see some action.
Suzy (Marie Gillain) is a stunning former showgirl and Heindrich’s one-time lover.
Maria (Maya Sansa) is an Italian contessa undercover with the French Resistance.
Female Agents is an action-packed tribute to the real-life espionage operatives whose exploits inspired the film.

“Kirk’s heart is in the right place. The way it’s portrayed is self-deprecating. He has literally gotten so into the role that he cannot get out of it, even when there’s no indication they’re making a movie anymore. Certain of us actors have gone that method route at times, but only up to a point. There’s professionalism and dedication; and then there’s total narcissism,” laughs Robert Downey Jr. when talking about his character Kirk Lazarus.
Robert Downey Jr. is Kirk Lazarus who consoles Ben Stiller as Tugg Speedman in Tropic Thunder.
The big Fantastic Fest screening of Tropic Thunder is tonight and I can’t wait to see it as well as go through the Paintball Hallway of Death! Guests will have to go through a hallway obstacle course while duking it out with paintball weaponry.

The trailer for the latest from director Edward Zwick (Glory) has been up over at Apple (watch here) and certainly gives hope this could be one of the highlights for 2008.
Synopsis:
Based on an extraordinary true story, DEFIANCE is an epic tale of family, honor, vengeance and salvation in World War II. The year is 1941 and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being massacred by the thousands. Managing to escape certain death, three brothers take refuge in the dense surrounding woods they have known since childhood. There they begin their desperate battle against the Nazis. Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell star as brothers who turn a primitive struggle to survive into something far more consequential – a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by saving thousands of others.
At first it is all they can do to stay alive. But gradually, as whispers of their daring spreads, they begin to attract others – men and women, young and old – willing to risk everything for the sake of even a moment’s freedom. Tuvia (CRAIG) is a reluctant leader and his decisions are challenged by his brother, Zus (SCHREIBER) who worries that Tuvia’s idealistic plans will doom them all. Asael (BELL) is the youngest – caught between his brothers’ fierce rivalry. As a brutal winter descends, they work to create a community, and to keep faith alive when all humanity appeared to be lost.

Ole Christian Madsen fresh off the heals of Prague, returns this year with the WWII thriller Flame & Citron (Flammen & Citronen). This is certainly one of the films I’m most looking forward to this year and still unsure exactly where I will be seeing it first.
