Could the best movie of all-time be Ikiru? On any given day I might have it ranked as my all-time favorite, which obviously surprises many that have never even heard of this Akira Kurosawa classic at all. From an inspired performance by Takashi Shimura to its bleak and yet hopeful tones, it manages to cradle the delicate balance of the “make each day count” films without ever reaching Yanni territory, instead scaling heights like a beacon that lights the way for generations to come to remind us how powerful, personal and moving cinema can be.

And so begins several days of vintage images from this film. Up first is this absolutely rare and classic publicity image from Welcome Home, Soldier Boys (1972). Give yourself 2 billion cinephile points if you can name all actors and the name of the lone actress in this still.

Welcome Home, Soldier Boys was directed by Richard Compton, who might be better known for having directed Macon County Line and Return to Macon County. The screenplay was from none other than Guerdon Trueblood who is perhaps best known for directing The Candy Snatchers. It has a fantastic cast and of the films that dealt with Vietnam and that came from the 70’s remains to this day one of the more underrated and under seen true gems. I wouldn’t at all call it necessarily like or similar to Rolling Thunder, but if you liked that film, then there is a real good chance you will also love Welcome Home, Soldier Boys!

One of the all-time great Weird Wednesdays screenings I’ve been to was for this film. Absolutely loved it. I often wonder just how much of a cult following this film has as many cinephiles I meet also note it as one of their favorites. Also known in the UK as The Love Cage.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’sTHE LOVE CAGE” stars Jane Fonda, Alain Delon and Lola Albright in the suspenseful drama of a young professional card shark who is pursued by American gangsters and escapes to the French Riviera. When he becomes the chauffeur of a rich widow and her beautiful young cousin, he finds himself involved in a web of mystery and intrigue. The Cipra Production was produced by Jacques Bar and directed by Rene Clement.
