In going through an older issue (171) I had of the French cinephile magazine MAD MOVIES, I found Alexandre Bustillo’s (Inside co-director) picks for best and worst films of 2004. Mr. Bustillo as some know was a writer for this publication before going onto fame with his debut Inside

One of the strengths of the French horror film Inside is that it doesn’t over light anything. You know how so many horror films these days seem to completely drown out dark landscapes with an over abundance of light? Well in Inside it features actual dark landscapes painted in deep black colors. The above image does have some bright lights creeping in but look how darkly painted with shadows and darkness the actress is in it. When we get to dark places in the film the lighting drops out all together and just the hint of lurking shadows there to tease us what is lurking about…

One of the most talked about horror films of 2007 is Inside, the debut film from Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury. Never has the term “a complete bloodbath” been more true for a film! It’s a film that will be unsettling, even for the most jaded of cinephiles. Along with [REC] and Frontiere(s) it’s at the cream of the crop of the best in horror for 2007. Oddly enough none of these films will probably get any theatrical screenings in North American theaters (outside of film festivals). Inside is getting dumped straight to DVD around Christmas time I believe.

Left to Right: Julien Maury, Me and Alexandre Bustillo.

Julien and Alexandre are the directors for Inside (À l’intérieur) which rocked the house this year at Fantastic Fest. I’ll have a full interview I did with them up on Twitch this week. I already posted a partial post on this with their thoughts on their Hellraiser project (view here). Julien and Alexandre are really huge cinephiles. They raided the local DVD stores for kickass 70’s horror films and like me fell in love with the “Texas Style” movie t-shirt being sold by the church.
