I’m a huge fan of Derek Yee’s One Nite in Mongkok. Protege as much as I wanted to like it felt as if it had nothing narrative wise conventional or unconventional to grab a hold of. His latest effort Shinjuku Incident aka San suk si gin (official site) is a return to a more dramatic role for Jackie Chan, which he has done more serious dramatic roles like in Crime Story. The difference in this outing is it’s a dramatic vehicle with the action mostly removed. I think it’s fairly well documented Jackie Chan has always wanted to have some serious non-action leading man roles under his belt and this one should prove as his closest to this he has been to date. At this point it doesn’t like there will be a theatrical US release of the film and more than likely if anything it will be released straight to video here. Although I wouldn’t rule out non-genre film festivals screening it here in North America.
