Belén Rueda turns in one of the most emotionally charged and haunting performaces in 2007 as Laura in The Orphanage. Having seen the actress in real life I can say I’m extremely impressed at how Bayona crafted her as the character. Here in this picture she plays the game (I’ll leave it at that as I don’t want to spoil anything since the movie won’t open in the US until December) that gave me the chills big time!

Filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona on the set of his debut film The Orphanage (El Orfanato). Now don’t get this one confused as being a straight up Dimension type of horror movie. This is a creepy film! In fact it’s one of the creepiest movies I’ve ever seen in my life. The game sequence in this movie alone gave me chills. I think having personal experience with family tales or from those of friends certainly aids in whether you dig this movie or not. I went into seeing this thinking “ok there is a little boy in a mask that may or not be a ghost… and he is physically much smaller than the lead female character… so I don’t really see myself getting scared much.” Through the course of the film of course I was on the edge of my seat or sunk back in my seat completely freaked out! I wasn’t prepared at all for all the suspense that is maintained throughout. I really did think I would get one or two scares but otherwise not be effected by much. Credit Bayona and screenwriter Sergio G. Sánchez for making me squirm like a schoolgirl.

This is not a movie I ever want to see before going to bed!
