::: Sitges 07: Night of the Living Nacho
Steve Dollar, Paste Magazine
Really well written piece that covers quite a few films at Sitges this year and a nice look at Nacho’s Timecrimes.

Over at Twitch, Todd brings us some incredibly exciting news on Timecrimes! Not only that he drops first official word of Nacho’s follow up to the film (if this was a karaoke party we would be queuing up David Bowie’s Space Oddity to celebrate).

The masked pink mummy in Nacho Vigalondo’s debut feature Timecrimes (Los Cronocrímenes). This image will stand as one my favorites of cinema 2007.
Fantastic Fest audiences ate up this refreshing softly stirring time travel film from Nacho Vigalondo (view blog). In Sitges audiences were much more hostile and indifferent to it. They seemed to go into it with knives out ready to cut it to pieces, which I found rather sad and unfortunate. Such is the fate of films from Spain that play there. If a film isn’t more of a straight up horror film like [REC] and in addition doesn’t have strong mainstream sensibilities it seems to get railed against. It’s unique voice and vision that was void of cliche and non-mainstream pandering is exactly what brought it to such praise at Fantastic Fest. Those that went into Timecrimes with an open mind at Sitges seemed to really respond to the film. I saw a long line of people that looked like they had just seen an angel from Heaven standing in line waiting to talk to Nacho Vigalondo after its first screening. A dense time travel film with deep musings on changing fate that acts as if the audience is smart and can follow along certainly is something I appreciate. As of now this film is my second favorite film of the year. My favorite still being P.T. Anderson’s There Will Be Blood.
Expect an interview I did with its star Karra Elejalde (Hector) and a part two interview I did with its director (to be a companion piece to the interview Peter Martin did) on Twitch soon.

Congratulations to Nacho Vigalondo (view blog) for his film “Timecrimes” winning best picture at Fantastic Fest this year.
“Timecrimes” aka “Los Cronocrimenes” was my second favorite film of Fantastic Fest 2007 (only behind P.T. Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood“). “Timecrimes” is a soaring debut and really puts Mr. Vigalondo on the map as a fresh new voice in cinema to keep a close eye on in the years ahead. Time travel through the course of this films hits on the theme if man can truly escape his fate and if some things are just inevitable regardless how hard we try to avoid them. Mr. Vigalondo does a hell of a lot with very little. Everything about the film feels rich and absorbing. I can’t wait to see it again in Sitges at the Melia! If you like films that deal with fate, time travel or are as rich as “Usual Suspects” or “Memento” then make sure you see this film when it comes out!
Of the Fantastic Fest 2007 karaoke singers Nacho was rated number one aka the very damn best! Followed by Juan Antonio Bayona and then Zack Carlson.
Pictures in the gallery do include Nacho karaoke-ing down the house with an electric rendition of “Tainted Love.”
