New Cinema Wallpaper of the Day

The Brothers Bloom marks the sophomore effort from filmmaker Rian Johnson (Brick) and opens limited in the US on December 19th with a wide release set for mid-January 2009. The first place you can catch it in North America is at the Toronto International Film Festival this upcoming Tuesday and Thursday (film listing). It certainly looks to be a fun mad caper film involving con men who never lose suddenly finding themselves perhaps going against the toughest odds they have ever faced, not to mention twists and turns they didn’t see coming.

I met Rian Johnson once back at the Sitges Film Festival two years ago. I found him to be very down to Earth, humble, sharp and witty, and overall very much a passionate cinephile. He seemed to be a director in love with what he was doing and sitting right on the beginning steps for having an entire magical filmmaking career with lots of diverse and rich stories to tell.

The US poster artwork for the latest Wes Anderson film, The Darjeeling Limited, was only slightly interesting. However, the Japanese poster artwork is absolutely perfect!

“The story reminded me of one of those family vacations you had growing up where everything would end in disaster. Even though we’re supposed to be having this blessed spiritual experience, we can’t quite get past the bickering that kept us away from each other for so long in the first place. This, in turn, leads Francis to do the one thing he never would have tried on his own – letting go a little. I missed while watching the film, yet is easily recognizable in this still that Jason Schwartzman has purchased himself some hand gel.
