Cold Sweat (De la part des copains) is one of the few Charles Bronson films I’ve yet to see. It comes from noted filmmaker Terence Young (Wait Until Dark and several early James Bond efforts) who also re-teamed with Bronson in The Valachi Papers and Red Sun. The reviews I’ve read for this have all been incredibly mixed with most either really like or really disliking it. However one looks at the movie I think we can all agree this is one fantastic Japanese poster for it!

There doesn’t appear to be any solid DVD releases of this but I’ll try and watch this one soon.

Charles Bronson Day

This concludes the Charles Bronson Day sub-part of the month long celebration of Japanese posters here at CID. Today I featured posters from these of Bronson’s films: Hard Times, Mr. Majestyk and Violent City (aka The Family).

If you haven’t seen Violent City aka The Family aka Citta violenta then this Japanese poster for it may not make a whole lot of sense or particularly resonate with you. I won’t get into too many details here so as not to spoil anything but lets just say a huge Sergio Sollima style set piece of the movie is on display here. I think it takes some balls to do a movie poster that really appeals more to fans that have already seen the film than to be one completely geared towards appealing to a broad range of consumers who haven’t seen it. This is a poster that is completely 100% a love letter for fans of it.

Now for those that have seen the film pay close attention to the four elements of the poster: Bronson, the elevator, Jill Ireland and immediately to her right the bullet ridden glass (which floats abstractly here and might not be immediately noticeable on first glance). I think it’s a thing of beauty the way these four elements are interwoven here and a damn near as perfect as you can get poster. Enjoy, viva the Japanese poster for Violent City!

Side note, the opening car chase might just be the best ever in any Bronson movie.

Fans of Poliziottesco/Poliziotteschi cinema should keep a watch for Mike Malloy’s documentary that fully explores it inside and out called Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films that Ruled the ’70s (IMDb listing).

Welcome to the Charles Bronson Day sub-part of the month long celebration of Japanese posters here at CID. Today I will be featuring posters from these of Bronson’s films: Hard Times, Mr. Majestyk and Violent City (aka The Family).

Artwork for Richard Fleischer’s Mr. Majestyk courtesy of Mike Malloy. I like the idea of this poster by having a crazed Bronson appearing ready to gun down all bad guys in sight with a backdrop of a huge explosion and some various pieces of action in a collage below. However, it just doesn’t all quiet come together like it should, largely because the particular image of Bronson feels like it has too much of a “deer in the headlights” look than a “Bronson in bloody hell rage” look. Regardless, I really enjoy this movie and for whatever reason seems to be one of his better under seen works and pretty much a steal buying on home video with most DVD’s for it around $5-10 bucks or so. Bronson getting paired with a Elmore Leonard crime story is a match made in movie heaven.

Macho and cool mark this terrific Bronson poster from Hard Times under its UK title of The Streetfighter. This movie marked the debut of filmmaker Walter Hill, who did several of my favorites ranging from The Warriors, The Long Riders, The Driver and 48 Hrs.
