Japanese Poster Appreciation Month – January 2009

I can only imagine the conversation the artist of this poster must have had with its distributor… “You want to cover up Eastwood’s eyes!?!?! EASTWOOD EYES COVERED UP!?!? HAVE YOU GONE MAD MAN?” To which the artist might have said, “When have you ever seen another poster like this where he gets to look like a complete badass with sunglasses on?” I think it works. You have a slightly unshaven Eastwood staring back just taunting you with how cool he looks in this. Like he is saying back at you, “Do you really think you can ever look cooler than this?”

The one thing that always puzzled me about this movie is why no one seems to shoot at the tires. Did they have bullet proof tires on this bus? Maybe I missed something.

About Japanese Poster Artwork Celebration Month:
To kick off 2009, I can think of no better way of doing so than celebrating Japanese poster artwork. The emphasis will be more of western films through the lens of Japanese poster artwork and of course some of my own personal all-time favorites. At a future date I’ll probably have a month devoted to solely Japanese films and their poster artwork. So be sure to tune in each day during the month of January as I have an incredible amount of incredible Japanese posters that will be on display. Hopefully at the end of this I can convert many of you into life long fans of Japanese posters!

New Cinema Wallpaper of the Day

Gran Torino is one of the best movie surprises in quite some time to come along. In it we find Eastwood returning to his tough guy roots in towering boisterous fashion. This is hands down his best work since Unforgiven. This movie is so good it hurts! I simply cannot recommend it highly enough.

Japanese Poster Appreciation Month – January 2009

Few leading men have what it takes to be a convincing movie tough guy for several decades. Some have it and some really really don’t. Bogart had it. Lee Van Cleef had it. Lee Marvin had it. Oliver Reed had it. Anthony Wong has it. Gordon Liu has it. Many others had it, though few and far between seem to have possessed this timeless ability to do it regardless of time, place or age. Clint Eastwood is in that elite group as witnessed in his latest tough guy role to date in Gran Torino (movie wallpaper). From his Leone pics to Torino, he keeps on keeping on as a movie tough guy and hopefully he has even more roles in store instead of straying to any melodramatic romantic lead roles. You can point to nearly any film he did in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s or even 2000’s as at least containing one highly amazing performance as a tough guy! 5 decades and going… here is hoping he can make it 6 with the 2010 decade rapidly approaching.

As we start to start to reach the halfway point of this month long celebration of Japanese posters I want to thank everyone that is following along and to those who have helped spread the word about it!
