Official statements from Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis that were just issued from Paramount Vantage on the 8 Oscar nominations for There Will Be Blood (see earlier announcement):
Paul Thomas Anderson
“I’m delighted that “There Will Be Blood” has been recognized by the Academy. These nominations are a testament to the cast and crew, who I am deeply grateful to, for their talent and collaboration. I am also very appreciative of the continued support from both John Lesher and Daniel Battsek and their staff. It’s a thrill to be in this.”
Daniel Day-Lewis
“YOU PUT ME SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH A GROUP OF FINE ACTORS. I’M PROUD TO BE IN THEIR COMPANY AND TO HAVE THE BROADER RECOGNITION FOR THE FILM IS A LOVELY THING. I COULDN’T BE HAPPIER FOR PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON TO WHOM WE OWE EVERYTHING.”

“It’s a privilege to work with Daniel Day-Lewis and few directors have had that privilege. I had to work up the courage to ask him, but I always knew there was only one man for the job.”
- Paul Thomas Anderson on Daniel Day-Lewis
“He blew my mind consistently. I would say daily. ‘I don’t know where the stuff that comes out of him comes from, but it’s an amazing mystery.”

I’ve often thought of the origins of Daniel Plainview’s (Daniel Day-Lewis) evil after seeing There Will Be Blood. Whether it was something from his past that drove him or if along the way he became a capitalistic type of vampire thriving on oil and money to keep his black heart beating. Perhaps I should read Upton Sinclair’s Oil! to get a better overall sense of his character.

Daniel Day-Lewis puts in his career best performance in this film. He has done some remarkable and stellar work previous to this, so believe me I realize my statement does seem rather far fetched, but I can assure you he exceeds and creates an entire character we have never seen from his cannon in his role in There Will Be Blood. Many actors rehash themselves with each role and others like Daniel Day-Lewis completely lose themselves in their characters and create an entirely unique language both physical, emotional and spiritual to express them through.

This my dear readers is an incredible acting duo. Sometimes when you put two actors in a scene together you get lightning in a bottle. Other times chemistry on screen and electricity is generated by having worked together multiple times before or intense rehearsing prior or during a film. Dano and Day-Lewis had worked together previously in The Ballad of Jack and Rose (2005). In There Will Be Blood they chew up scenery and each other in landmark performances that will both be tough to beat come Oscar time.
