This Guillermo del Toro produced sci-fi thriller from filmmaker Vincenzo Natali will screen in competition at the upcoming 42 Sitges Film Festival and count me in as being very excited to see it. I was lucky enough to get one of the promotional books for this film back at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008 which were pulled rather quickly once they realized how many huge spoilers were contained in it (well I probably have 3 or 4 books actually). The character designs and attention to detail was staggering and it seemed like this film was a real labor of love that could be something special. I have no idea how this film will turn out, the images like this one look outstanding and I covered my ears from those that saw a working print while at screenings in Cannes this year.

New Cinema Wallpaper of the Day

As I’ve written before I’m under lock and key from female fans of the site to always post any images I ever come across of either Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal. So today I present you with several images of them in their new film Rudo y Cursi. Note the first image is the poster and the third is a behind the scenes image.

Rudo y Cursi is currently playing at Sundance and even better yet has been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics which already has a website page up (view here). Release dates so far listed only show it will get a limited release in LA & New York on May 8th. A full release should follow in the weeks after (so mid to late May perhaps for fans in the US).

Note that Guillermo del Toro is one of its producers.

Speaking of Diego Luna, is there not a more underrated performance in 2008 than his amazing performance as Jack Lira in Milk?

Ivana Baquero puts in one of the best kids performances in a film in recent memory as Ofelia in Pan’s Labyrinth. I still remember seeing this for the first time at Fantastic Fest and the first time I saw it at Sitges. This is one of those timeless films that never ages and only gets better.

As far as images from fantasy films go, it gets no better than this. I think this sequence in the film Pan’s Labyrinth (El Laberinto del fauno) in particular is way up there as one of the best film sequences in cinema history.
