This Marfa, Texas area lensed film grows on me each time I see it. There are a couple of different Japanese posters for the film and this one is by far my favorite as I think it fuses everything together quite well in very minimal fashion and colors.

This latest film from Woody Allen hits the UK at the upcoming Times BFI 52nd London Film Festival (film listing).

Much has been made about the scene between Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem that takes place in the film. The reality outside of the hype is that said scene takes place for all of about 2 seconds in the film and might as well been three friends giving each other a quick hello kiss on the cheek. If you’re walking into seeing this movie for that scene alone, you’re likely to find more sordid and risque action in a Muppet movie!

In Vicky Cristina Barcelona it was great seeing so much of one of my favorite cities in the world in Barcelona up on the big screen and many of its stunning attractions like La Sagrada Familia (view my pics of). It was disappointing that Mr. Allen didn’t film any scenes at night against the Mediterranean where so many great seaside restaurants help set the city apart. For pure relationship comedy and as a postcard film Vicky Cristina Barcelona works, though I’d be much more interested in seeing a feature length film with just Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem directed by Woody Allen. Penelope Cruz literally steals every single scene she is in here and the interplay her and Javier have deserves many more films.

Woody Allen romanticizes one of my favorite cities in the world in Barcelona in his latest film. I can’t wait to see all the locations shot in the film and think the setting of Barcelona should serve as an amazing back drop for its story. If you have never been to Barcelona, I can’t recommend it highly enough from its historic offerings to its fine dining along the Mediterranean coast, there is something for everyone there!

Synopsis:

Vicky and Cristina, two young American girls, go to spend the summer in Barcelona. Vicky (Rebecca Hall) is straight-laced and about to be married. Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) is a free-spirit and very sexually adventurous.

They meet a flamboyant, Spanish artist (Javier Bardem) and his beautiful but insane ex-wife (Penelope Cruz). They all become involved in romantic adventures that are either hilarious or harrowing, depending on your point of view. Barcelona is seen as a very beautiful, romantic city like New York was in the movie, Manhattan.

Inspired Japanese poster artwork for the latest Coen Brothers film, No Country for Old Men. The artwork itself features a distortion of brown that makes the overlying area around the cow skull seem more artifacted than normal, which is certainly an interesting added artistic choice.
