“Stanley’s already a genius, but I think his life would be a lot better if he had more freedom, if his father let him express himself more. I think Stanley has a good heart but right now he’s in the middle of a crisis.”
- Jeremy Blackman on his character Stanley Spector

Not much of a secret really that Paul Thomas Anderson likes to burn things, as well as toss in live firecrackers in the editing room (while the film is being cut) and as such Marfa, Texas certainly afforded him a nice opportunity to burn as much as he wanted.

Paul Dano of course was great in a largely non-speaking role in Little Miss Sunshine. Here he is equally great in a heavily speaking role and pulls off with ease a rather complex character. Paging Mr. Best Supporting Actor Oscar!

I’ve often thought of the origins of Daniel Plainview’s (Daniel Day-Lewis) evil after seeing There Will Be Blood. Whether it was something from his past that drove him or if along the way he became a capitalistic type of vampire thriving on oil and money to keep his black heart beating. Perhaps I should read Upton Sinclair’s Oil! to get a better overall sense of his character.
