Filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar and lead actress Rachel Weisz on the set of Agora. I didn’t catch this at Cannes but the buzz there was that the film was too long and overwrought. Hopefully the post-Cannes cut can hone in on its story and regardless I’ve loved Amenbar’s previous films from The Others to Open Your Eyes, so I’m hoping to enjoy this one as well.

New Cinema Wallpaper of the Day

The Brothers Bloom marks the sophomore effort from filmmaker Rian Johnson (Brick) and opens limited in the US on December 19th with a wide release set for mid-January 2009. The first place you can catch it in North America is at the Toronto International Film Festival this upcoming Tuesday and Thursday (film listing). It certainly looks to be a fun mad caper film involving con men who never lose suddenly finding themselves perhaps going against the toughest odds they have ever faced, not to mention twists and turns they didn’t see coming.

I met Rian Johnson once back at the Sitges Film Festival two years ago. I found him to be very down to Earth, humble, sharp and witty, and overall very much a passionate cinephile. He seemed to be a director in love with what he was doing and sitting right on the beginning steps for having an entire magical filmmaking career with lots of diverse and rich stories to tell.

One of the more memorable films in recent memory was this curious entry. While not perfect Fernando Meirelles, who was brought in late in the game, crafted a nice thriller meets romance with a heart of gold.
