It made several of the Drafthouse’s top 10 lists (view here) and it’s easy to see why this film is so highly regarded. Seems odd this film comes out the same year the same issues the film highlights some 30 years ago once again come to the forefront of politics in California. Talk about a timely film and I do have to say that everything Gus Van Sant has been doing in cinema seems to culminate into his effort here. The mountain he has been building with his voice has now been reached and casting Sean Penn who turns in such a remarkable performance adds greatly to the charm and power of this film.

Way before Sean Penn was head of the Cannes 2008 jury he was Jeff Spicoli in the 1982 Amy Heckerling directed film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Cadet Captain David Shawn (Tom Cruise), Cadet Major Brian Moreland (Timothy Hutton) and Cadet Captain Alex Dwyer (Sean Penn) in Harold Becker’s drama “TAPS.”

This is one of my favorite films from youth. I haven’t rewatched it with adult eyes but it definitely left an impression on me when I was taken to see it opening weekend and was quite taken back with its eye opening drama and shocking finale (at least for me at such a young age).
