It was an amazing ride here delivering cinema history at Cinema is Dope. This site is now officially closed but have no fear a brand new version of it is now available in a new form and new journey at Museum of Cinema. All content here will (as time permits) be moved over there.

Upcoming at Cinema is Dope

Just want to say a quick thanks to everyone who helped support and spread the word about Cinema is Dope in October. CID is a little indie effort out of Austin, Texas. I focus on celebrating cinema, spreading the word on great films past and present to check out, exploring cinema and as well restoring original stills from films so that future generations can enjoy them.

The monthly numbers for this site are currently 200,000 page views a month and now over 100,000 monthly unique visitors and growing.

November
In addition to celebrating Richard Rush’s Psych-Out, I will be posting a ton of film reviews and much more 42 Sitges Film Festival coverage. I have some more interviews in the pipeline but a bit of delay as I have to get them translated out with subtitles.

December
The month will kick off with original stills from The Wild Bunch, Getaway, Truck Turner, Torso, L’Eclisse, L’Avventura and a very rare image of Bruce Lee. Add to this mix more film reviews and more 42 Sitges Film Festival coverage!

Up from Pixar; Cinema is Dope in NY Times

NOTE: Regular posting now that I’m back from vacation will resume later tonight.

Back on December 14th I wrote up about a good “unfinished” portion of the new Pixar movie “UP” (wallpaper) that I had seen at BNAT (read here). Well today in the NY Times there is a brief quote and mention of Cinema is Dope (read here; page 2).

I guess the article is highlighting that many are nervous given this films synopsis/premise that it can be a big Pixar hit. Which I can understand. I knew loosely what it was about and frankly it sounded very uninteresting. Heck even in the first part of the film you might be thinking in the back of your mind… “Oh crap this might turn out terrible!” Luckily though there comes a certain point in “UP” where it literally takes off and never looks back and becomes one of the most enchanting, fun and hilarious rides I’ve had with a movie in years. The audience at this point of BNAT were taking in at this point every single thing the movie threw at it and I mean it was an entire audience rolling and laughing out loud with its non-stop funny moments and entertainment. It almost reminded me of seeing “There’s Something About Mary” for the first time and the audience just kept laughing and laughing non-stop to the point you would think everyone would pass out from lack of oxygen. “UP” when it gets going around the 15 minute mark is definitely hands down up there with the best Pixar has done to date if not more so. I get that people were unsure about it because even I was but don’t let the initial premise or first part of the film throw you off. It really does deliver and then some. The Pixar magic is there that you have come to expect and with such high expectations on each of their following releases this one certainly met them for me and everyone else that saw it… and we only saw the first portion of it and unfinished at that. How about we speculate that this will be one of the big surprise hits of the year because I can already tell you that if you thought “Wall-E” was a blast… you haven’t seen nothing yet as Pixar as a mighty movie magic surprise for you with, “UP!”

Can I also add the less you know about the films second act and on the better. Luckily none of this is in the synopsis or trailers to date (well there is tiny glimpses but nothing that really gives you an indication where it might be going).

In addition to this you can now use your Facebook account to leave comments for any post. If you aren’t seeing the full post then find and click the “read more” option to expand it out. Just scroll to the bottom of any post and select “Facebook Connect.” You probably also noticed the new Google Friend Connect feature on the site and I plan to put up a blog post explaining it in detail over this coming weekend.

January 2009 was the best month yet for Cinema is Dope (CID). Thanks for the support and helping spread the word about this site! If you’re on Facebook, be sure to become a fan of the CID “Page” there. February should be a great month here for Lee Marvin fans and I also will be post several articles on how film festivals can fully harness the power of social media.
