The masked pink mummy in Nacho Vigalondo’s debut feature Timecrimes (Los Cronocrímenes). This image will stand as one my favorites of cinema 2007.

Fantastic Fest audiences ate up this refreshing softly stirring time travel film from Nacho Vigalondo (view blog). In Sitges audiences were much more hostile and indifferent to it. They seemed to go into it with knives out ready to cut it to pieces, which I found rather sad and unfortunate. Such is the fate of films from Spain that play there. If a film isn’t more of a straight up horror film like [REC] and in addition doesn’t have strong mainstream sensibilities it seems to get railed against. It’s unique voice and vision that was void of cliche and non-mainstream pandering is exactly what brought it to such praise at Fantastic Fest. Those that went into Timecrimes with an open mind at Sitges seemed to really respond to the film. I saw a long line of people that looked like they had just seen an angel from Heaven standing in line waiting to talk to Nacho Vigalondo after its first screening. A dense time travel film with deep musings on changing fate that acts as if the audience is smart and can follow along certainly is something I appreciate. As of now this film is my second favorite film of the year. My favorite still being P.T. Anderson’s There Will Be Blood.

Expect an interview I did with its star Karra Elejalde (Hector) and a part two interview I did with its director (to be a companion piece to the interview Peter Martin did) on Twitch soon.
