FANTASTIC FEST 2008 – FINAL BATCH OF FANTASTIC FEATURES

FANTASTIC FEST 2008 - FINAL BATCH OF FANTASTIC FEATURES

Coverage overview and then full press release follow.

Of special note here is that if you haven’t already bought a badge, do so now! Badges are nearly completely sold out.

Here we are a year later and back for another round of Fantastic Fest! In just 18 quick days the 2008 edition kicks off! Today we get a peak at the almost final list of films that will be showing. There are still a few titles left to be announced and there will as in years past be secret screenings. So don’t take the list below as the final final final slate as it notes in it towards the end. Look for more titles on the 4th and of course you will have to make it out to discover what the secret films are. The secret screening lineup is very strong this year with some titles you might be able to guess and others you won’t see coming at all!

This latest installment has films that feature the wild west, Paris Hilton, spaghetti western South Korean style, great fanboy comedies in Astropia from Iceland and Fanboys (a film that never seemed like it would ever see the light of day at times), as well as several other titles sure to please. You really have to tip your hat to IFC Films though for deciding to up the release cycle for an Asian film. As we all know way too well is that the tendency for studios/distributors is once they buy an Asian title they sit on it for 1-2 years for both release and often letting it screen at festivals. The problem with that is within 3-6 months an English friendly DVD of the title they have hits and once that happens you can be sure it’s being downloaded all over the Internet or bought through parallel importing of the official release. This all adds up to a film that by the time it has been released finding its market already saturated from head to toe. So thank IFC Films for striking while the oven is hot for The Good the Bad and the Weird. While Jade Warrior didn’t do anything for me, I am looking forward to its directors latest film Sauna, which I hear is a very effective slow burn horror film.

As you might expect, things don’t turn out so well.

Darren Bousman, director of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th installments of the wildly popular SAW franchise, pulls a “what-the-f…” 180 degree turnaround to create a very personal, very demented, bloody goth rock opera about organ repossession with lead performances by Paul Sorvino, Paris Hilton and Ogre from Skinny Puppy.

Sauna
US Premiere / Dir. Antti-Jussi Annila / Finland / 2007 / 93 min

While mapping the new border between Russia and Finland after the war, the joint task force stumbles upon a mysterious sauna in a remote swamp, a sauna that allegedly has the power to wash away all sins.
